North Lake Tahoe - Tahoe City
Historic Gateway to Tahoe.
The town of Tahoe City grew up embracing the Truckee River where it exits from Lake Tahoe. This is the only outlet to the lake. At this point a dam provides an awsome viewing point of giant trout plus the means to regulate lake level and the flow of water that refreshes Reno, Nevada before meandering into Pyramid Lake.
Tahoe City also serves as a historic crossroads where tourists disembarked from the train that connected Lake Tahoe and the main rail route through Truckee, then boarded ferry transports to other points around the lake.
Today, most travelers arrive by road, but continue to pass through Tahoe City. Turning south on Hwy 89, Tahoe City and the west shore of Lake Tahoe maintain the sense of true rustic mountain retreat before arriving in South Lake Tahoe, the largest town in the basin. Heading north on Hwy 28, the road climbs toward the North Shore where mansions hug the lake and the many golf courses. Heading northwest on Hwy 89 follows the curves of the Truckee River canyon to the town of Truckee, Interstate 80 and the Sierra Valley beyond.
The North Shore offers the Casino night life on the Navada side of the state line.
